Gaia air quality monitors - product series

Share: aqicn.org/gaia/cn/

The GAIA Air Quality Monitoring Stations are specially optimized, highly accurate and easy to use monitoring stations designed by the Earth Sensing labs. The stations are suitable for affordable budget - as low as $200 for the most recommended A12 station.

GAIA A12 Monitoring Station

Air Quality Monitors

The Gaia Ax series is a semi-professional Air Quality monitoring product range suitable for outdoor as well as indoor and industrial Air Quality monitoring, and produced and manufactured by the Earth Sensing Labs from the WAQI project.

Accurate and Reliable

All the semi-pro stations have been carefully designed for highly reliable and accurate monitoring, using redundant sensors and high quality components. All the stations are tested individually, and produced is small batches to ensure the best quality.

Designed for efficiency

The semi-professional GAIA station provide data as accurate as the traditional high-end professional air quality monitoring stations (e.g. using BAM or TOEM), but at only 1/20th of their price. Together with the GAIA big-data cloud system, hundreds of stations can be deployed, maintained and analyzed in a single city in just few clicks.

The semi-professional GAIA are also specially designed for outdoor use with IP67 waterproof material and UV proof ABS plastic.

Production Ready Devices

The following devices have been developed and tested since 2017 and are now production ready.

Gaia A12: Professional Sensing Station

Gaia A12 product view
The Gaia A12 comes with 2 redundant PM sensors (so 3 in total). This setup is mandatory for “official” AQI readings (eg. data broadcasted to a wide audience), as a way to ensure the data reliability of the PM sensors. The meteorological sensor is an high precision sensor for Relative Humidity, Temperature and Pressure sensing.
  • Particulate Matter Sensors: 3x PMS 5003
  • Meteorologic Sensors: BME 280
  • Power Supply: 5V (USB compatible)
  • Connectivity: WIFI (with external antenna)
  • Dimensions: 130 * 80 * 70 mm
  • Weight: 380g
Station cost is $200.

Gaia A13: Additional gas sensors.

The Gaia A13 is based on a standard A12 professional configuration, with one additional Gas sensor.
It can support different gas sensing:
  • Carbon Dioxyde (CO2)
  • Ozone (O3).
Station cost is $250.

Note that, due to longer sensor qualification time, only limited number for A13 stations are produced.

Gaia A11: Personal Sensing Station

A11 Dimensions
The Gaia A11 is the most simple version of the series, but also the most affordable. It comes with 2 integrated sensors, one for Particulate Matter (PM2.5, PM10) as well as one for Relative Humidity and Temperature.
  • Particulate Matter Sensors: 1x PMS 5003
  • Dimensions: 65 * 95 * 55 mm
Station cost is $100.

Gaia A12 Installation & Mounting Instructions

Mounting:

Mounting with strips
Mounting with screws
There are 2 options for mounting the monitoring box:
  • Using screws: The GAIA enclosure is made of standard outdoor ABS box, which comes with 4 holes dedicated for screwing the box.

  • Using standard plastic strips: The GAIA station is delivered with 2 strips of 1 meter, which can be used to fixed the station on a pole.

Location:

Overall, the most important is to place the station somewhere protected from direct winds, rain and dust sources.

For official stations, there are two more requirements, with the intent is to locate the station on sites representative to the ambient air quality levels (reference).

Average daily traffic
(vehicles per day)
Minimum
≤1,000 10
10,000 10
15,000 20
20,000 30
40,000 50
70,000 100
≥110,000 250
  • Height: The station should be mounted at a height above a minimum of 1.5 meters. The objective is to prevent from dust resuspension, which can happen if someone is walking nearby the station.

  • Distance from road traffic: The station should be located at least 10 meters away from the nearest road. See table on the right for full specification.

Distance:

  • The station comes with a 10 meters (33 feet) power cable (5V with DC3.5 connector), so the station should be located no more than 10 meters away from the nearest power source. If needed, we can provide longer power cable (contact us in this case).

  • The monitoring station is using a regular external WIFI antenna, which allows the station to be at least 20 meters away from the nearest hotspot. In case longer distance is needed, enhanced external antenna can be used (contact us in this case).

Devices Under Development

The following devices are under research and development, and not yet available for production:

Gaia A13++: More gases

Also, we are currently evaluating sensors able to monitor the following gases.

  • Formaldehyde (CH2O)
  • Total volatile organic compound (TVOC)
  • Carbon Monoxyde (CO)
  • Nitrogen Dioxyde (NO2)
  • Sulfur Dioxide (SO2).
  • Gaia A12 LoRa: A12 with LoRa connectivity.

We initially worked on a GSM version of the Gaia A12, but as the GSM connectivity is fading away, it is not a future proof solution. So, for those who have no WIFI conenctivity, this station will allow to connect to the global things network.

    Gaia A18: Off-grid Sensing

The Gaia A18 is the same as the Gaia A12, but can be operated without D/C power supply, via the 3 cells battery and the included solar charger.
Under normal solar conditions, the box can be operated for at least 3 months without charging. Without, it can operate for a minimum of one month (depending on the sampling frequency).
The Gaia A18++ variant is packed with a total of 9 cells, making it able to last 1 year under normal solar conditions.

    Gaia A19: Professional Off-grid

The Gaia A19 is the most advanced of the current Ax series. It includes both GSM/3G/LORA Network connectivity (in case WIFI is not available), as well a GPS sensor for positioning the box.
The embedded battery is extended to a 9 cell battery, allowing the box to run for a minimum of one year without D/C charging (under normal solar conditions).

    All Products

There are so many air quality related products on the market; Some are good, other are bad. For consumers like us, it can sometime be difficult to find out which product is good and worth buying and which one is bad and should not be bought. For this reason, we have created this 'Air Quality Products' page on which you will find a selection of products that we have carefully studied and evaluated.
